Castles, Parks and Gardens in the East of Germany
Day 1 - Berlin - Potsdam
Arrival in Berlin. Welcoming by the courier. On a first tour you get to know the most important sights like Charlottenburg Chateau, Kurfuerstendamm, Gedaechtniskirche, Potsdam Square, Brandenburg Gate, the avenue Unter den Linden and Gendarmenmarkt. Walk across the Isle of Museums with its five great collections: the Old and New Museum, the Old National Gallery, the pergamon Museum and the Bode Museum. The whole ensemble has been listed as World Cultural Heritage since 1999. Afterwards you travel to Potsdam. Experience the old garrison town and royal seat on a tour of the town. Towards the evening you are invited to go on
a voyage on the River Havel. Prussia´s kings and famous architects created this landscape
that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
Day 2 - Potsdam - Dessau - Erfurt
Check out early and visit the parks of Sanssouci with the New Palace. The New Palace is the latest and largest 18th-century building in the park. It was built from 1763 to 1769 according to the plans of Johann Gottfried Buering and Carl of Gontard for Friedrich the Great, who used this imposing chateau to demonstrate that the Silesian Wars had not ruined his state. Continue to Woerlitz near Dessau.
The garden realm of Dessau-Woerlitz, protected since 2000, is a 145 square kilometre-large pasture landscape on the Elbe river, including seven chateau and park complexes. The parks of Woerlitz are the first Continental gardens in English style - man-made meadows, lakes, canals, bridges, monuments and temples form a unique cultural landscape. Continue to Thueringen. Overnight stay in Erfurt.
Day 3 - Erfurt - Weimar
Buffet-style breakfast at the hotel. Walk through the medieval town with the famous ensemble of the cathedral, the St Severi church and the Kraemer Bridge.
After a lunch break you travel to Weimar, "town of classics" and home to World Heritage Sites. You will come across traces of Goethe and Schiller, as well as other famous personalities. You will see Goethe´s house on the Frauenplan, the park on the River Ilm, Bauhaus, the National Theatre, Herder Church and the Elephant Hotel. Overnight stay in Erfurt.
Day 4 - Meissen - Dresden
Journey through vineyards to the town of Meissen. This "Town of the Blue Swords" enjoys worldwide fame since the founding of the porcelain manufactury. Visit the show workshop and show hall, where you will have the opportunity to watch the craftsmen modelling and painting the china or to go to the exhibition to get some insight into the mainfold possibilities of shaping the "white gold". Continue along the Elbe to Dresden - 20 kilometres of the Elbe valley are also listed as World Cultural Heritage.
In the evening you have the chance to enjoy a performance at the Semper Opera. overnight stay in Dresden.
Day 5 - Dresden
Today you set off on a big tour of the former royal seat of the Saxon elector and today´s provinicial capital. Walk through the Zwinger, past the Semper Opera, the chateau with the Procession of Princes, Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady - inside tour subject to crowd, rehearsals, concerts and other events) and the Bruehl Terrace - an ideal starting point for visits to some of the many local museums.
In the early afternoon you will visit the Gruene Gewoelbe (Green Vault), the famous treasure chamber of the Saxon electors and kings. The rest of the afternoon is at your disposal.
In the evening you will dine in a restaurant in the vaults . Typical Saxon cuisine colourful market bustle in the encampment, the alchimist´s cellar and guilds´ vaults will transfer you back to the time of August the Strong. Overnight stay in Dresden.
Day 6 - Dresden - Berlin
Return to Berlin through the Spreewald, where you will go on a punt through the romantic countryside of rivers, lakes and canals. Continue to Berlin. Flight home
